A major release of linphone is out, with plenty of new exciting features !

  • total rewrite of the graphical interface, still based on GTK+ but with libglade-2.0. New layout, pretty design (well, I think so)
  • linphone automatically runs in the system tray when closed
  • the new interface runs also on windows XP: the level of feature is now exactly the same on linux and windows XP
  • a new H264 plugin based on x264 project allows to reach high quality video even with limited bandwidth
  • new STUN support: works better with firewalls
  • automatic hangup when call is lost (because remote peer disconnection or whatever media faillure)
  • automatic discovery of the network's MTU, to allow efficient streaming.
  • accurate bandwidth management settings: linphone always attempts to fill all the available bandwidth by adjusting the video bitrate.

Easy start of linphone on windows

This article explains how to pack linphone together with its config file inside a auto-expand file so that you can share it with friends that aren't familiar with IP telephony, proxies and so on.

An interesting use-case is to have it on a USB key you bring with you to use in an internet cafe.
